Cragganmore distillery takes its rock face of a name from the mountain in whose shadow it sits. And this is a whisky with many high approaches and hidden valleys of flavour. Known as the most complex aroma on Speyside, it must also be one of the most delightful because the distillery can’t keep up with demand.

Cragganmore 12 Year Old is hugely complex and rich, with layers of flavour and a whiff of smoke in the finish. Speyside today is widely revered for its sublime malt whiskies and for its fine salmon fishing. It is here, in this fertile triangle of land between mountain and sea, long been known as the Garden of Scotland, that Cragganmore single malt whisky is distilled. Nestling on the banks of the legendary salmon river, Cragganmore is, for many, the home of the definitive Speyside malt. Having won Gold at the Scotch Whisky Masters in 2010 and 2011, Cragganmore 12 Year Old is perfect for sharing when the need arises to raise a glass.

Serving Suggestion:
Serve on the rocks in a tumbler or tulip glass to concentrate its flavour, and add a splash of water to release more of its complexity.

Region For many, the definitive Speyside.
Appearance Gold.
Body Firm, rounded, light to medium.
Nose A combination of sweet floral fragrances, riverside herbs and flowers with some honey and vanilla. “The most complex nose of any Single Malt Scotch Whisky” (Michael Jackson).
Palate A strong malty taste with hints of sweet wood smoke and sandalwood.
Finish A long, malt-driven finish with light smoke and hints of sweetness.

Expert Reviews

Insights from some of the best in the business

A nose of sherry, brittle toffee, nuts, mild wood smoke, angelica and mixed peel. Elegant on the malty palate, with herbal and fruit notes, notably orange. Medium in length, with a drying, slightly smoky finish.

Gavin D Smith, Malt Whisky Yearbook 2015, p.97

Balances richness and fragrance superbly.

Dave Broom 2003, Whisky Magazine, Issue 28

Very accessible, and not given to grandiosity, but it's one of the Speyside greats. Good with some desserts. Try it with cassata.

Michael Jackson 2003, Whisky Magazine, Issue 28

Definitely one of my favourites in the range. You could explore the layers for along time.

Rob Allanson 2009, Whisky Magazine, Issue 79

The nose has honey, soft fruits and sweet spring meadow notes and is very inviting, and on the palate soft barley, summer fruits and a sweetness lead up to an almost tangy finish.

Dominic Roskrow, Malt Whisky Yearbook 2015, p.97
